Infrared thermography and the invisible?
by Gilbert Migirditsian, professional engineer, home inspector, and founder of GM Inspection
Ever wonder how it is possible to see the “invisible”? Did you know that infrared thermography is the use of thermal imaging device to see and measure thermal energy emitted from an object? Thermal, or infrared energy, is light that cannot be seen by the naked human eye. Your body, can, however, detect it by the sensation of heat. Even ice cubes, very cold objects, emit thermal energy. This thermal energy is then converted to the visual spectrum by means of an infrared camera. In the hands of a trained professional, this tool allows for the proper diagnosis of water infiltration, insulation issues, moisture damage, ice damage, ventilation issues, and even electrical issues. The most important aspect of an infrared evaluation is to ensure that the inspection is properly carried out and, most importantly, that the interpretation is done with the same diligence. Remember, issues with your home need the care they deserve and act now before things get worse! See you next time when I’ll be back with more useful information!
